Senior Living Options

Senior Living communities are housing arrangements designed to cater to the living requirements of older adults providing a safe, healthy and comfortable long-term care environment. Some communities cater to the general needs of older adults, such as physical accessibility , while others are specifically designed for people with chronic cognitive health conditions like dementia.

Senior living communities may also provide recreational and fitness facilities, housekeeping services, continuing education opportunities, transportation assistance, medical care services and other essential and non-essential services to support residents in everyday life.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is residential senior living that, in addition to providing a safe, engaging and vibrant lifestyle, offers personalized help with the activities of daily living. Assisted living helps solve a common problem with living at home – isolation. The assisted living lifestyle combines engagement, activity and fun with needed support and assistance. Communities offer countless daily opportunities to socialize with new friends, family and staff. Residents take art and baking classes. They belong to clubs. They garden. They laugh. They connect!

Typically in this setting there is a Caregiver to Resident Ratio of 1:13.

Memory Care

Memory Care is specialized residential care for older adults living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Most memory care facilities have staff-secured entrances and exits to prevent residents from wandering.

Most memory care units are located within assisted living or nursing home facilities, although some are standalone communities entirely dedicated to older adults living with some form of dementia. Typically in this setting there is a Caregiver to Resident Ratio which varies according to size of location.

Residential Board and Care

Board and care homes are houses in residential neighborhoods that are equipped and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually between 2 and 10. These homes provide comparable care to what's offered at assisted living communities, but it's usually less than what a nursing home provides. Typically in this setting there is a Caregiver to Resident Ratio of 1:2.

Independent Living

Independent living communities are a great option for older adults in generally good health who don’t want the burden of home ownership. Independent living communities usually consist of a single building—or a few buildings on a single campus—made up of studios, condos, or apartments with 1–3 bedrooms. Some independent living communities are incorporated into a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) that includes the levels of care residents may need in the future. Typically, a resident of independent living will receive a meal plan as part of their monthly fee, or as an optional add-on fee, as well as other services, like light housekeeping.
